By providing a wholesome and safe environment, parents give their children the knowledge that they are loved and valued as unique individuals. The love of family members for one another communicates God's love. The experience of family prayer helps develop a personal relationship with God. CCC 2226

The body is a sacred gift and children need help to be comfortable with the human body. Key points:

  • use proper names for body parts and their functions;
  • teach them to respect and care for their bodies, including hygiene, good eating habits, exercise and rest; CCC 2288-91
  • stress the difference between appropriate and inappropriate touch and behavior.

Children at this age are naturally curious about their bodies and the bodies of others. Affirm the goodness of your child's body.

Children are highly impressionable. Create a wholesome environment that will foster your child's growth and development in human sexuality. Key points:

  • monitor the use of television, computers, music and printed materials; CCC 2496, 2224
  • be alert to your child's non-verbal reaction as well as their direct questions;
  • explain what is seen and it how does or does not support Christian values;
  • be aware of who your child(ren) are with and the environment they are in.

Building self-esteem begins at birth and is a foundation for all levels of development. Respect the uniqueness and dignity of each child verbally, physically, emotionally and spiritually. Key points:

  • teach them to accept themselves as God created them;
  • help them to understand that God and you as parents love them even when they misbehave; CCC 1846-48

Children need to be nurtured within a trusting relationship. Key points:

  • show parental warmth and affection through presence, listening and touch; CCC 2228
  • answer questions honestly, correctly, and with language children can understand;
  • be good role models; CCC 2223
  • provide opportunities for them to witness loving relationships both within and outside your immediate family.

Making choices is the basis for moral decision making and the formation of conscience. A child's conscience is formed through guidance in making decisions. Key points:

  • allow them to make simple decisions;
  • give constructive ongoing guidance on what is morally good;
  • help them learn the consequence of actions with appropriate discipline.
