CEMT 110 CHURCH HISTORY (2 credits) focuses on major movements and personalities of Christian history, with special emphasis on theological development, methods of theology and changing spiritual currents within the Roman Catholic tradition.
CEMS 111 OLD TESTAMENT: HEBREW SCRIPTURES (2 credits) studies the writings that are sacred to both Jews and Christians. Various types of literature will be analyzed using the techniques of contemporary biblical interpretation.
CEMS 112 NEW TESTAMENT THEOLOGY (2 credits) analyzes New Testament writings, notably the Gospels and Paul's letters, using the techniques of contemporary biblical interpretation.
CEMS 202 ENGAGING SCRIPTURE (2 credits) deepens students' familiarity with foundational, biblical texts and with the different ways these texts have been read and intrepreted through the centuries.
CEMD 112 UNDERSTANDING CHRISTIAN FAITH (2 credits) is an introductory study of the sources, development, nature, doctrines, sacraments and ethical implications of Christian faith, as well as an examination of challenges to faith.
CEMD 180 THE CHRISTIAN TRADITION (2 credits) is an introduction to the discipline of Christian theology with a substantial focus on select themes and texts of the Christian Scriptures, such as creation, covenant, kingdom, prophets, a gospel and New Testament letters. Attention is also given to the method of theological study and some development of the Christian tradition since biblical times.
CEML 311 CHRISTIAN WORSHIP (2 credits) is an overview of the origin, development and cultural aspects of Christian worship rooted in symbols, myths and rituals. The Church's celebration of the mystery of Christ in word and sacrament.
CEMM 311 MORAL THEOLOGY (2 credits) overviews the principles of ethical living developed from the scriptures, church traditions, and human experience, along with a presentation of contemporary trends and problems.
CEMD 312 THE CHURCH TODAY (2 credits) investigates models for understanding the Church today, itsleadership structures, its tasks in society, its ecumenical endeavors, and Vatican Council II as a pivotal event in the Roman Catholic Church.
CEME 380 DEVELOPMENT OF RELIGIOUS IDENTITY (2 credits) looks at the psychological development and characteristics of the child and adolescent in relationship with faith-life today. A study of the formation of conscience in light of new developments in psychology.
CEMP 380 THEOLOGY OF MINISTRY AND SPIRITUALITY OF MINISTRY (2 credits) emphasizes the development of a theology of ministry and spirituality, with a focus on their relationship with a pastoral context.
CEMP 390 TOPICS IN PASTORAL MINISTRY: BIOETHICS - Principles and Contemporary Issues (2 credits) Participants will be introduced to key concepts and approaches in the Catholic moral tradition to the range of issues in contemporary bioethics. Guided by the U.S. Bishops' Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services and selected literature, participants will study the interaction of Catholic faith and bioethical developments across the spectrum of life and society.
CEMP 390 TOPICS IN PASTORAL MINISTRY: CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING (2 credits) introduces the concepts of Catholic Social Teaching through the Church's major social encyclicals. Practical questions in ministry will be explored.
CEMP 390 TOPICS IN PASTORAL MINISTRY: ADULT FAITH FORMATION (2 credits) introduces the theological, pastoral and catechetical principles that serve as the foundation for adult faith formation. Topics include the adult believer, adult learning principles, qualities of mature adult faith, goals for adult faith formation and planning and implementing adult faith formation programs.
CEMP 390 TOPICS IN PASTORAL MINISTRY: CLINICAL PASTORAL EDUCATION (2 credits) is an special, intensive counseling course with Fr. Dick McGuire who is certified by the National Association of Catholic Chaplains. An application process is required for all interested students. This course has its own fee and scheduling structure, but is accredited by Saint John's University through a special arrangement with the Diocese of Saint Cloud so that college credits can be earned.
CEMP 390 TOPICS IN PASTORAL MINISTRY: FAMILY MINISTRY (2 credits) develops a theology of family from scripture, church documents, and current theologians with emphasis on understanding family systems. Introduction to theory and skills of intergenerational family learning processes using integration of faith development, prayer, and spirituality.
CEMP 390 TOPICS IN PASTORAL MINISTRY: LIFELONG FAITH FORMATION CEMP 390 TOPICS IN PASTORAL MINISTRY: PASTORAL LEADERSHIP (2 credits) will focus on defining pastoral leadership and exploring the skills needed to provide effective leadership within the parish and educational setting.
CEMP 390 TOPICS IN PASTORAL MINISTRY: RCIA (2 credits) introduces the Church documents and theology of the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults with a focus on the pastoral approaches.
CEMP 390 TOPICS IN PASTORAL MINISTRY: SPIRITUAL COMPANIONING (2 credits) emphasizes that, as active parishioners, leaders and teachers, we don't walk in front of others spiritually, we journey together with them.
CEMP 390 TOPICS IN PASTORAL MINISTRY: SPIRITUALITY AND DAILY LIVING (2 credits) will focus on our journey with God, self and others. An emphasis will be placed on self knowledge, balance in our lives, prayer and a willingness to be open to growth.
CEMP 390 TOPICS IN PASTORAL MINISTRY: THE SECOND VATICAN COUNCIL AND THE THEOLOGICAL METHOD (2 credits) This course will introduce students to essential vocabulary, methods and sources that contribute to theological knowledge. An understanding of the science of theology will be gained by concrete examination of the theological movements before, during and after the Second Vatican Council. The essential aim will be to gain an ability to examine Vatican II as a theological event.
CEMP 390 TOPICS IN PASTORAL MINISTRY: THE VIBRANT PARISH (2 credits) Beyond the intimate community of family life, the parish is for most Catholics their foremost experience of Christian community, enabling them to express their faith, grow in unity with God and others, and continue the saving mission of Christ. This component will not propose a description of the parish, but of a vision of the ideal we continually seek so as to direct our energies towards the pastoral revitalization of the parish community. Four aspects of parish life will be examined: the people, the mission, the structure and the Sunday celebration of the Eucharist.
CEMP 390 TOPICS IN PASTORAL MINISTRY: YOUTH MINISTRY (2 credits) emphasizes the theology and theory of current Catholic youth ministry; with a focus on adolescent faith development and youth culture. Skills and methods of effectively ministering to youth in parish settings will be explored.
CEMP 390 TOPICS IN PASTORAL MINISTRY: WORLD RELIGIONS (2 credits) provides an introduction to basic beliefs, practices, history, festivals, and sacred texts of at least six major religions of the world. Participants will be introduced to ways of revelation and salvation that pose unprecedented challenges and present promising opportunities to Christian attitudes to other religions.
CEME 390 TOPICS IN RELIGIOUS EDUCATION: CATECHETICAL AND SACRAMENTAL METHODOLOGY (2 credits) This class will use life experiences in which one is learner and teacher, listener and teller, evangelized and evangelizer to explore the connection between faith and life throughout the stages of faith growth. We will look at tools to foster lifelong faith formation in the parish.
