The Knights of Columbus, especially Council 961, prides itself with community involvement through donations and volunteering. Here are the many activities in which Council 961 is involved.
District 19 has adopted a city park in Saint Cloud and renamed it Knights of Columbus Park. The Knights clean it annually and pay for improvements to the park.
The Knights support Minnesota non-public schools through the walkathon/workathon. Students either walk or work to raise money for their schools.
Every January, Saint Cloud Area councils of the Knights of Columbus sponsor the local-level competitions for the International Free Throw Championship. The event is open to all boys and girls from the ages of ten through fourteen.
The Minnesota KC Council established the Student Loan Fund to help Knights and their families attend college. The students receive interest-free loans that don't have to be paid until after graduation.
Every year, Knights sponsor a Kids Picnic with the help of the Saint Cloud Park & Recreation Department.
Volunteers from Council 961 assist VA Medical Center patients in attending Sunday services, one Sunday of each month. This service is available to multiple denominations.
In January Knights distribute Pro-Life Roses at churches and accept donations for pro-life groups.
Knights encourage businesses to close for Good Friday.
Once a year Knights distribute Tootsie Rolls at area stores and banks while accepting donations for organizations that support people with disabilities.
Council 961 has adopted a two mile stretch of Minnesota Highway 23, east of Saint Cloud. Every spring, summer, and fall, a crew of Knights pickup the garbage along the road, piece by piece.
Local Knights organize a Memorial Day Mass at Assumtion Cemetery every year.
Local Knights sponsor the Carson & Barnes Circus in a visit to Saint Cloud every couple of years. Carson & Barnes is the biggest of the big top circuses, with a five-ring tent.
Since 1996, the Knights of Columbus have volunteered to sell tickets for the Midway at the Benton County Fair. In 1998 our duties were expanded to include ticket sales and ticket takers for the Grandstand.
Before Christmas, Knights ring bells at a local store to help the Salvation Army raise funds.
Council 961 has previously saved postage stamps, in collaboration with the Saint Cloud Mission Office. However, the internet age has made the world smaller, making it more practical for people to send their collectable donations directly to the Franciscan Missions. The missions sell these items to collectors as a fundraiser.
