A
Shepherd’s Care
By Bishop John F. Kinney
Words
of gratitude to one pastor, words of welcome to another
My brothers and sisters in Christ,
It was announced that Pope Benedict XVI has accepted the
resignation of Archbishop Harry Flynn of St. Paul and Minneapolis as
of May 2, the archbishop’s 75th birthday. As the ordinary of
St. Paul and Minneapolis, the archbishop also served as the metropolitan
for the nine suffragan dioceses in Minnesota and North and South Dakota,
the ecclesiastical Province of St. Paul and Minneapolis.
During his 13 years as our metropolitan, the archbishop has been with
us in our Diocese of Saint Cloud on many different occasions. His presence
has always been a moment of grace and joy for us. Archbishop Flynn
is first and foremost a pastor to the very core of his being. I have
so often witnessed and personally experienced his pastoral heart, his
dedication to Christ and his great love for the people of the Church.
For me, Archbishop Flynn is also a friend, a delightful and most hospitable
man. Thank you, Archbishop Harry Flynn, for all you have given to all
of us as our metropolitan. We in the Diocese of Saint Cloud are grateful
to you.
At the same time we now welcome as our new metropolitan, Archbishop
John Nienstedt. No stranger to us, he served previously as our neighboring
Bishop of New Ulm until his appointment as Coadjutor Archbishop of
Saint Paul and Minneapolis. Now, with the retirement of Archbishop
Flynn, Archbishop Nienstedt becomes the eighth Ordinary of St. Paul
and Minneapolis and our metropolitan. In late June Archbishop Nienstedt
will receive the pallium, the symbol of office of the archbishop, from
Pope Benedict XVI in Rome. To Archbishop Nienstedt, we offer our sincere
and heartfelt welcome and our pledge of prayers as you begin your pastoral
responsibilities. We are grateful for your presence among us and look
forward to our time together.
Thank you, Archbishop Flynn! Welcome, Archbishop Nienstedt.

Our mission is to be His heart of mercy, voice of hope, and hands of justice.

A Prayer For Vocations
O loving and merciful God, you call us to follow the example of
Jesus, your Son, through lives of service to one another.
Open our minds and hearts to hear and recognize that call.
Give us the necessary grace to remain faithful in our choice to commit our lives
to you in whatever way you lead.
We ask especially that you send your Holy Spirit upon the Church to stir the
hearts of many to accept a vocation to serve you as priests, sisters, brothers,
and deacons.
In your name we pray. Amen.

Bishop of the Diocese of St. Cloud
